Green for the Holidays

As your guests are coming to your home for the holidays, you may be planning to do some cleaning and painting in preparation. What better way to completely and inexpensively change the look of any space than with a fresh coat of paint in some neutral but contemporary color. But did you know that it’s one of the biggest sources of indoor air pollution? That head ache you get from being in a newly painted room is from conventional paint which contains volatile organic compounds — or VOCs — which are known to cause everything from headaches to certain cancers.  Wait – When your friends come to call, all you want them to smell is that buche de noel fresh from the oven or the mulled wine heating on the stove top!  The head ache should be from your champagne – not your paint color!

Instead, look for low or no VOC paint, which are now sold by nearly every paintmanufacturer. The cost of low or no VOC paints are comparable to conventional paints and they last just as long. Just look on the can’s label to make sure you are choosing the healthiest option for your home.

Another source of those dangerous VOCs is household cleaners. Before you spend a lot of money on store-bought cleaners, take a look at the non-toxic options you may already have in your pantry.

Items like baking soda, vinegar, and borax are effective cleaners for every room in your home. They do everything from disinfecting surfaces to killing mold.  Or, if you want to go the store-bought route, look for cleaners that are plant-based and biodegradable such as Method and Seventh Generation products.

Even that new piece of furniture can be an irritant so shop carefully! Some furniture is made from medium density fiberboard — or MDF — which contains a formaldehyde-based resin.   Gas from the formaldehyde slowly releases into the air and can irritate eyes and cause breathing problems. Formaldehyde is also used in many furniture adhesives.

Remember that if your entertaining space is too small, the Lise Howe Team can fix that by helping you find a new home by President’s Day!
